A 21-year old drunk Marina resident injured two Monterey police officers in a Monterey DUI car accident that took place on March 25, 2010 on Fremont Street at around 1:00 am.

Cory Overton, the drunk driver, was driving his 2000 Dodge Dakota towards the Abrego Street Station when he collided head-on with the Monterey Patrol car. Reportedly, Overton crossed the yellow lines and crashed into the oncoming patrol vehicle. The two police officers were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated for upper back, head pain, and neck injuries. Overton has been charged with DUI and a felony count of causing injury while driving under the influence of alcohol.

It is good to know that not much harm came to the officers due to Overton’s disregard for the public’s safety by driving while drunk. The Real World: San Francisco star David Rainey (otherwise known as “Puck”) was arrested for drunk driving in a San Diego injury accident that took place on March 24, 2010 on California’s Route 79. Rainey’s 8-year-old son was also injured along with him in the car accident.

Rainey was of for a fishing trip when he swerved his car to avoid hitting a deer but lost control and the car rolled down an embankment and rested upside down in the stream bed. The star was transported to a hospital with severe injuries- broken bones in feet, right hand and neck and fractured sternum and clavicle. An off-duty Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he crashed his Mercedes-Benz into another vehicle and injured a passenger. Deputy Allan James Waters had crashed his vehicle half an hour before outside City Hall in Dana Point but was allowed to drive away.

About 30 minutes later, at 5:20 p.m., Waters crashed his Mercedes-Benz into a Toyota in Laguna Niguel, causing it to cross the center median and slam into a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol. The 78-year old Toyota passenger, Dolores Molina, suffered minor injuries.

The Sheriff’s Department is conducting an internal investigation to determine why Waters was allowed to keep driving. He will remain on leave while the investigations are conducted. Outcome: Teenage girl seriously injured and hospitalized

A 16-year-old girl suffered major head injuries and possibly a traumatic brain injury (TBI) when the Jeep she was a passenger in overturned in Nevada City.  According to the California Highway Patrol, she was one of two passengers in a Jeep driven by a 17-year-old male.  Alcohol is believed to be involved.  Both the driver and the young girl were transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley, CA.  The third passenger, a 17-year-old male, was uninjured.

This is just another example of a senseless auto accident involving driving under the influence of alcohol.  We hope that everyone injured in the accident has a full and speedy recovery.  However, the driver deserves punishment and a reminder of the responsibility we all have to drive our cars safely and legally.

Mother of eight and grandmother of fifteen, Maria Esperanza Rodriguez, was struck by a drunk driver and killed while she was crossing the street on River Boulevard just north of Height Street in Bakersfield on August 6, 2009.  The Bakersfield drunk driving car accident took place less than a block from her home.  According to the CHP, the drunk driver was stopped at the intersection, became impatient, and ran through the intersection running over Ms. Rodriguez.

The number of women across the nation, including California, arrested for drunk driving has increased nearly 30 percent in a decade, according to a study reported by the Dallas Morning News.

From 1998-2007, the number of women arrested for driving under the influence increased 28.8 percent, while the number of male arrests decreased by 7.5 percent.  Males still represented the majority of DUI arrests, but the gap between the genders had significantly decreased.

According to Chris Cochran of the California Office of Traffic Safety, “Younger women feel more empowered, more equal to men, and have been beginning to exhibit the same uninhibited behaviors as men.”

While are not against people of both genders exercising their freedom and acting uninhibited, it is still necessary to look out for the safety of others and to not recklessly or negligently endanger them.
